BIRDING THE COLUMBIA RIVER GORGE

The Columbia River is a habitat unto its own, offering a wide variety of species. Birds of prey float in the thermal drafts over rocky cliffs. Geese, ducks, and herons enjoy the open waters. Songbirds of all kinds announce their cheer throughout the meadowlands, forests, and shrub-steppe prairies. Migrating birds return every spring to conclude journeys from Mexico, Central America, and beyond.

The Columbia Gorge Ecology Institute is supportive of efforts by our Gorge-area birding groups to identify, count, and conduct research on behalf of our winged friends. You are encourage to report your first sightings of the season to Stuart at 509-493-3363 or johnstonstuartf@hotmail.com.

We have provided links to some of our birding neighbors and their research data below:

We have a new bird species in the Columbia River Gorge! Eurasian-collared Doves were first observed in the Gorge at Dallesport, so we now have 302 species listed in the National Scenic Area Bird List!
