SUPPORT THE INSTITUTE

The Institute depends on support from people like you to continue to offer the SECRETS programs in the public schools and to develop new ecological education programs for people of all ages. Together, individual members, businesses, and foundations help the Institute to provide life-changing experiences for our students and build a community of ecologically literate citizens.

FUNDING - Behind the Scenes
Institute funding comes from the following sources:

  • 60% - Grants from private foundations and government agencies;
  • 30% - Membership donations, corporate partners, and fundraising events; and
  • 10% - Fees for service.

School Programs
The budget to run the on-going programs runs the Institute approximately $2,500 per classroom per year. Participating teachers have made SECRETS a high priority, but school budgets are limited. Teachers and administrators still struggle to find the resources, raising funds from parent-teacher organizations, classroom budgets, or even out of their own pockets!

Enrichment Programs
Programs that build on lessons learned in the classroom science unit, such as Summer of Discovery and After-School Programs, are funded in part by program fees. Special grants provide funds for program development and scholarships for individual students.

Program Development
Current school and enrichment programs are organized to provide cost-effective quality science education. As the Institute develops new programs, we recognize that we can make the biggest impact by investing the majority of our resources into direct programs and services.

Institute programs focus on creating quality educational experiences, and organizational expenses reflect our work:

  • 80% - Staff salaries and contract services
  • 10% - Supplies
  • 10% - Services and Travel Costs
